Baumgarten
Françoise Braun (BAUMGARTEN) was born in Strasbourg (France) in 1951. She studied graphics and illustration in the "Arts Déco" high school in Strasbourg. She started with a bibliophily book (25 fully hand made copies). In 1973, her first exhibition of underglass paintings (old painting method originating in eastern Europe, rather unknown in France) was held at Helmina gallery in Strasbourg.
From 1976 to 1981, most of her large naïve and fantastic underglass paintings were collected by Max Seidel, German author of fine arts books (bibliography: Max Seidel "Hinterglasbilder", Belser Verlag 1980)
In 1982, she took the BAUMGARTEN pseudonym, and painted on canvas, which started a long sequence of poetico-naïve paintings. She continued with numerous exhibitions in France and had an exclusive contract with Japan until 1996.
Since 2000, inspired by Haute Provence austere landscapes, Baumgarten's style has evolved towards moderation and bareness (exhibition "Terres de Haute Provence" -Haute Provence lands-)
